God Speaks
I'm not sure I believe in God
but I think I've heard him speak.
I've stood on top of the tallest waterfall on Earth
and I think I heard a murmur.
I've cried out in fear as turbulence shook my airplane to bits
and I think I heard an echo.
I've begged for my life, kneeling in front of a man with a gun
and I think I heard a chuckle.
I've stood over my father, lying prone as he bled
and I think I heard a sigh.
I've held my wife as we cried over a toilet
and I heard perfect silence.
I look at myself in the mirror every day and I try to quiet my thoughts,
to listen to a voice that says everything will be alright
and as soon as I turn around I hear a tongue sticking out at me.
I've stopped trying to listen
because while I'm not sure I believe in God,
I'm pretty sure he'd want me to just get on with it.
