Dogs.
Dogs are too good for this world.
My dog has some sort of bite or rash that he wouldn't stop gnawing at so he had to be fitted for a cone around his head while we treat his wound. It's awful. It's killing us to not give in and take it off him.
Of course, we've researched that it's all normal, him being down in the dumps, but it's heartbreaking to see because it's like he's ashamed. Like he's being punished. He's cowering like he was when we first adopted him, he's not eating, not drinking.
It really is amazing how dogs are so sensitive. This week there was also a story making the rounds on social media about how they "probably" have dreams just like humans, centered around their fears and likes, around their owners and playing and being naughty and scolded.
A couple of months ago Smaugy (our dog) woke us up in the middle of the night (he sleeps nestled between my wife an I) growling and shaking; it was the freakiest thing. He was backing up against the head of the bed between us, growling at something at the foot of the bed. I turned on the light and he immediately quieted down, went over and peeked over the bed, sniffed around and then hurried back to snuggle with us. I'm pretty sure he had a nightmare.
I started keeping a dream journal of sorts, meaning that I've taken to writing down any weird or intense dreams, good or bad, as notes on my phone. There's one about monsters that literally hunt us when we dream, a nice throwback to the days of good ol' Freddy Krueger. Could there be a story there from a dog's perspective? Maybe.
NaNoWriMo is upon us! I'm cheating a bit, but I don't care. I've been writing after work. I'm having trouble keeping the tone consistent. I keep falling out of the rhythm I set at the beginning, so every time it happens I switch POV. This story I might actually just add POVs as needed, from what I'm seeing. It's taking clearer shape in my head every time I write.
I had a thought yesterday about how to make the eeeeeevil mad scientist even more mad, but I might be reaching.
For now, my 5 min break is over. Back to work.
Dogs rule. They really are too good and noble for this world.
